Recreation

The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation was established in response to environmental concerns voiced throughout the Basin.

See our recreation map below. Click on the individual sites for a picture of the location. The picture provides a link to more information. You can access a list of our recreation sites here. There are several recreation sites along the shore of Lake Pontchartrain where you can Enjoy Our Lake.

The Lake Pontchartrain Basin stretches from lush hardwood forests and slow flowing rivers of the north shore to the bayous, swamps, lakes and sounds leading to the Chandeleur Islands. From the fisherman making his way through the early morning fog to the kayaker slowly making her way through the spring irises, to the family picnicking along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, the Basin is an environment to experience and cherish.

LPBF and its partners have restored many of the waterways and habitats of the Pontchartrain Basin so they are once again a resource for recreational opportunities. As of 2006, Lake Pontchartrain was removed from the Louisiana DEQ Impaired Water Bodies List for “Primary Contact Recreation” (i.e. swimming or full body contact).

The following links also provide information about swimming, fishing, boating and more in and around Lake Pontchartrain.

Rain and stormwater runoff affects water quality. Please check our weekly testing results for these sites prior to swimming. (Click here to view water quality sites and information.)
