Dr. Shea Penland

Louisiana had a big loss recently.  Dr. Shea Penland, the guru of barrier island preservation and a Board member of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation passed on March 24.  Shea dedicated his
professional life to investigating, documenting, and developing an understanding of the processes of our coast.  His knowledge of the Chandeleur and other barrier islands was unsurpassed.  Dr. Penland had the ability to take complex issues and explain them in simple terms.  His work will continue to positively influence the preservation of coastal Louisiana.

New Canal Lighthouse

New Canal Lighthouse

We have made much progress at the New Canal Lighthouse site.  We are currently renovating the
cinder block building for use as a multi-purpose meeting/education center. We anticipate its completion
this summer.  We should begin construction of the foundation of the lighthouse this spring.  We are
working hard to raise the rest of the funds necessary to complete the reconstruction.  Please
make a donation
to help us rebuild the New Canal Lighthouse. For more information please visit www.saveourlake.org or call (504)836-2215.
