Look What's Cooking
When New Orleans’ native and Purdue Basketball player, Lauren Mioton came home in the summer of 2007 and saw the slow recovery that the New Orleans area was facing, she decided she needed to do something to help. The “Live to Eat” Cookbook contains 250 recipes from Purdue alumnae, staff and Louisiana residents including Purdue alumni and Saints quarterback, Drew Brees. All the profits from cookbook sales will go to the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation to support the ‘Save Our Coast’ effort.

The cost of the “Live to Eat” Cookbook is $20 per copy which includes shipping.  Cookbook orders will be taken until March 1.   An order form can be found on the Purdue’s website at www.boilermakernetwork.com.

North Shore Waterway Protected from Pollution
With the help of our conservation partners and several Covington residents, we have persuaded the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to deny a Scenic Rivers permit for a proposed wastewater treatment plant that could dump up to 750,000 million gallons per day into Timber Branch, a tributary of the Tchefuncte River.  The ruling came in late December.  Download copies of the comment letters LPBF submitted at www.saveourlake.org.

Lakefront Development Stopped for 3rd Time
LPBF garnered overwhelming public pressure from citizens and environmental groups to stop an ill-sited proposal to build 11 homes along one of the last remaining untouched stretches of Lake Pontchartrain’s north shore.  The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources withdrew the project from permit consideration in December.  LPBF will continue to closely monitor development that is slated in this highly unique and ecologically valuable
region of the basin.

Tank Storage Facility Bows to Pressure
LPBF joined other environmental groups in sending comments of concern on a water quality discharge permit for Safeland Storage, LLC, a petroleum storage tank terminal in St. John the Baptist Parish.  Last month the company modified their permit to no longer discharge bilge or slop water into the Maurepas Swamp.  This change appeared to be in direct response to invasive species concerns raised in the groups’ letter.
