Right now they are finishing a plan to allow industrial ocean fish farming - the growing of fish in huge cages out in open water - in the Gulf of Mexico, and are scheduled to approve this plan in January 2008. Public meetings are being held in each Gulf state to allow the public to weigh in on the plan. The Louisiana meeting is on Tuesday, December 11th from 6-9pm at the Airport Hilton (901 Airline Drive, Kenner). If you are interested in learning more, or are concerned about how open ocean aquaculture may affect the Gulf of Mexico, please attend this meeting! This is likely to be the only chance the public will have to provide input. The 15th Annual North Shore Let’s Make Waves Party and Silent Auction was celebrated by over 350 people on November 17th, 2007 at the newly rebuilt Pontchartrain Yacht Club in Mandeville, LA. Partygoers enjoyed a beautiful night on the lake, wonderful food by local area restaurants, cocktails, an awesome silent auction and dancing to the music of Overboard. We would like to thank all of the sponsors, the restaurants and auction donors who helped make this event a huge success! ____________________________________________ Education: Water Watch 2007-08 Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation Education Department offers a monitoring program for middle schools and high schools in the Pontchartrain Basin to increases awareness of water quality in the Lake Pontchartrain Basin. LPBF facilitates as classroom teachers have students test water samples bi-weekly from selected sites in canals or waterways on the south shore or from selected sites along rivers or creeks on the north shore. Results are reported to LPBF and in the spring correlations are made on the data collected. A powerpoint presentation is prepared by the students showing the results.
