New Science & Engineering Team Critiques State’s Master Plan

In 2006 the  Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation formally released our “Multiple Lines of Defense Strategy to Sustain Coastal Louisiana” paper (full paper, summary).  A grant awarded to LPBF by the McKnight Foundation is intended to foster development of the Multiple Lines of Defense Strategy and to promote its application in coastal Louisiana.  An Assessment Team composed of multi-disciplinary, professionals was assembled to address these issues.  The first task of the team was to review the state’s draft master plan to restore the coast considering the Multiple Lines of Defense Strategy.  A document was released recently summarizing the team’s critique of the state’s plan.  A series of Assessment Team meetings were held in March, but unfortunately, we were not able to review the entire plan by the April 2 deadline.  Detailed comments are provided for Planning Units 1, 2 and 3a.  No detailed comments are provided at this time for planning units 3b and 4.  The Assessment Team will continue its deliberations for at least 2007 and other planning documentation will be forthcoming.
