The 11th Annual Save Our Lake Golf Classic turned out a sold out crowd on March 12 at Chateau Golf & Country Club. Early in the day golfers were treated to po-boys provided by Mr. Ed’s Seafood Restaurant, snacks and drinks and Bloody Mary’s. Later at the Awards Ceremony, golfers received a plethora of door and raffle prizes from free car washes to hotel stays. They also refreshed with Level Vodka Martini’s provided by Glazer’s Companies of Louisiana, salad and gumbo provided by Chateau Coffee Café and Chops Bistro, Chris Calonge’s wonderful jambalaya and a bunch of yummy deserts provided by Dockside Seafood & Oyster Bar. A great time was had by all.
A special thank you to our Golf Tournament Co-Chairs, Jack Jensen, Jr. and Danny McMyne for all their hard work and support. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to our committee members, Michelle Hudson and Pauline Richard of Omni Bank, Glenda Jensen of TCI Trucking Services, and Becky Persson of Champion Graphics Communications.

It’s time for the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation’s 11th Annual Save Our Lake Fishing Rodeo. Grab your rod and reel for a day of fishing and family fun on Saturday, April 21, 2007.
Participants are welcome to fish anywhere in the Pontchartrain Basin. If you think you’ve caught a winner, you can weigh in at one of three stations - The Harbor in Mandeville; Bonnabel Boat Launch in Metairie; and Gulf Outlet Marina in Chalmette. |
Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnic snacks and join in the fun at our Awards Picnic at The Harbor in Mandeville. There will be soft drinks and beer and NOLA Lending Group, LLC will be cooking up delicious jambalaya. Masters of Ceremonies, Don Dubuc and Todd Masson will be on hand to present awards to the winners. We’ll have lots of great door prizes!
Tickets are only $25 for adults and $10 for children under 16. Each ticket includes one entry into the rodeo and awards picnic, a rodeo t-shirt, a one-year membership to the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation and two tickets to the Back to the Beach Festival on June 2 and 3!
All contestants who register on or before April 13 are eligible to win the Early Bird prize.

Lighthouse Update
We are patiently awaiting approval from the U.S. Coast Guard for the construction bid package to stabilize the New Canal Lighthouse. We hope to have the lighthouse stabilized by June 1. In the meantime, we have been approved and have installed a private aid to navigation, in other words, a light to guide boaters into the harbor. The light was donated by Automatic Power, Inc. through Kid Falcone, who generously offered to maintain it as well. The light is mounted atop the old fog bell. Since the weather is great this Spring, we will begin to station a couple of staff members at the lighthouse once per week to answer questions to people who come to look at the damage. Tours of the sight cannot be given until the lighthouse is stabilized: we hope to begin those as soon as the stabilization work is complete.

State Master Plan
In November 2006, the state released its preliminary draft Comprehensive Coastal Protection Master Plan (CCPMP). It is intended to address flood protection and coastal restoration needs of coastal Louisiana. In developing the plan, the state has adopted LPBF’s Multiple Lines of Defense Strategy (See website). The master plan includes possible levee alignments, flood gates, coastal restoration features etc. The plan does call for closure of the MRGO at Bayou la Loutre. Although the plan does include many restoration recommendations of LPBF’s Pontchartrain Coastal Lines of Defense Program or the Comprehensive Habitat Management Plan, LPBF did submit comments to the state regarding deficiencies or potential problems with the plan. A link to the state’s plan and LPBF comments may be found at www.saveourlake.org/wetlands.htm. A primary criticism of the master plan is the lack of assurance to maintain the health of the coast which can best be assured by a development of a map of the wetland habitat goals for the coast.
We encourage everyone to review the state’s master plan and be involved in this important planning effort.
