Ill-Sited Development on the Tchefuncte Raises Concerns.

Directing development away from wetlands and floodplains toward more appropriate areas makes a lot of sense as our region rebuilds. Wetlands and floodplains serve to buffer our communities from storm surges and rain events. However, a recent development proposal near the mouth of the Tchefuncte River just south of Madisonville is drawing opposition from groups and residents throughout the Pontchartrain Basin. Aptly named, Pleasure Beach, the proposed 15-lot subdivision is being slated for a 7-acre swath of marsh along the Tchefuncte River. A similar project was proposed nearby two years ago by the same applicant though due to tremendous public opposition, the plan was withdrawn.

While the amount of land to be impacted appears small, the project would set a significant precedent for opening up thousands of acres of undeveloped land from the Tchefuncte to the Tangipahoa River. LPBF has been circulating a talking point sheet about the project to assist interested citizens in preparing letters to the permitting agencies. Comment letters on the wetlands permit must be postmarked to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by Friday, May 26th.  Click here for examples of letters that LPBF has submitted on other ill-sited development projects.
